Parents of Adolescent FAQ
Why does my teenager need to speak to someone outside the family?
Many young people find it easier to speak openly with a neutral, trained professional. Therapy offers a space separate from family dynamics where adolescents can explore thoughts and feelings safely, without worrying about upsetting anyone at home.
Why cant they talk to me?
Seeking support for your teenager is a caring and thoughtful step. Adolescence is a complex developmental stage, and no parent is expected to have all the answers. Reaching out for help reflects awareness, care, and a willingness to support your child’s emotional wellbeing.
Will I be told what my teenager says in sessions?
Therapy relies on confidentiality to be effective. Session content is not shared with parents or guardians.
That said, parents are not excluded from the process. You are involved at the outset, and concerns can be raised at any time. If communication is needed, the young person will be informed and involved wherever possible.
What about safety concerns?
Safety is always prioritised. If there are concerns that a young person is at risk of harm, appropriate steps are taken in line with ethical and legal responsibilities. Where possible, this is handled transparently and with care, keeping everyone informed.
How will therapy help my teenager?
It supports adolescents in understanding themselves, managing emotions, and developing healthier ways of coping and communicating. This often has a positive impact on family relationships.
How many sessions will they need?
There is no fixed number of sessions. Some adolescents attend for a short period, while others benefit from longer-term support. Progress and needs are reviewed collaboratively over time.
Do parents attend sessions?
The first session is attended with a parent or guardian. Ongoing sessions are one-to-one, allowing the adolescent space to engage independently.
What can I do to support my teenager alongside therapy?
Being open, patient, and supportive makes a meaningful difference. You don’t need to have all the answers, listening, noticing changes, and encouraging communication are often enough.
Parent support sessions are also available for those who would like guidance during this process.
What if my teenager doesn't want to engage?
This is not uncommon. Therapy is approached gently and at the adolescent’s pace. Feeling unsure or resistant does not mean therapy won’t be helpful.
