Adolescent Therapy FAQ
Do I have to come to therapy if I don’t want to?
Therapy works best when you feel at least a little open to it. You won’t be forced to talk or pushed to share anything before you’re ready. The first session is about seeing how it feels and whether it’s right for you.
What actually happens in a session?
Sessions are a space for you. You might talk, think things through, ask questions, or sit quietly. There’s no pressure to perform or explain yourself perfectly. We go at your pace and start wherever you are.
What if I don't know what to say?
That’s completely okay. A lot of people don’t know where to start and you don’t need to. We can figure things out together.
Will my parents know what I say?
What you say in therapy is private. I don’t share session content with parents or guardians.
If there is ever a reason to speak with your parents, I will talk with you first and explain what will be shared and why. You will always be kept informed.
The only times confidentiality must be broken are when safety is involved or when the law requires it. Even then, I aim to be open and supportive with you wherever possible.
Do my parents come to my sessions?
Your first session is attended with a parent or guardian. This helps everyone understand how therapy works and gives space for questions.
After that, sessions are one-to-one, just you and me.
How long are sessions?
Each session lasts 50 minutes.
How many sessions will I need?
There’s no set number. Some people come for a short time, others for longer. We’ll review things together as we go.
What if I don't like it?
That’s okay too. Therapy should feel safe and respectful. If something doesn’t feel right, we can talk about it, or you can decide not to continue.
Is therapy only for serious problems?
No. Therapy is for anyone who feels anxious, stressed, low, stuck, or just wants support. You don’t need to be in crisis to come.
Do I need to prepare anything?
No preparation is needed. Just come as you are.
What if I feel nervous before my sessions?
That’s completely normal. Many people feel unsure or anxious before their first session. Therapy is approached at your pace, and you are always in control of what you choose to share.
